What you get

Built for the truck you’re driving

Standard car navigation doesn’t account for the height of a 13-foot, 6-inch truck. Terrapin starts with your vehicle’s dimensions.

Low-clearance alerts

Terrapin compares your vehicle’s height with federal bridge-clearance records along your route. When it identifies a possible conflict, it provides an on-screen warning and a spoken alert before you reach the bridge.

Your rig, your numbers

Save your box truck or enter your tractor and trailer separately. Terrapin combines the measurements to calculate your rig’s overall height, length, and weight.

Stops along your route

Find rest areas, truck parking, fuel, CNG stations, hotels, restaurants, and hospitals along your route. Choose how far you’re willing to travel off your route to reach a stop.

Driving screen

Keep the distance to upcoming rest areas, fuel stops, and truck parking visible while you navigate. Tap a location to add it to your trip.

Voice search

Say something like, “Find hotels about three hours ahead.” Terrapin estimates where you’ll be and searches for places near that point.

Background navigation

See your next turn and remaining distance in your notifications, even when the app is running in the background. Use the notification to resume navigation or end your trip.

How it works

Three steps to your first trip

  1. Enter your vehicle

Choose a preset profile or enter your vehicle’s dimensions and weight. Setup takes about a minute.

  2. Plan your trip

Search for a destination, select your starting point, and choose your toll-road and highway preferences. Review possible bridge-clearance alerts and nearby stops before departing.

  3. Start driving

Follow Google-powered turn-by-turn navigation while Terrapin displays additional information about upcoming stops and possible clearance hazards.

Important information about routing: Terrapin currently checks planned routes for possible low-clearance bridges. Full truck-specific routing that accounts for height and weight restrictions is still in development and depends on support from our mapping provider. Until those features are available, do not assume a suggested route is suitable for your vehicle. Always follow posted signs, applicable restrictions, and permit requirements.

Questions

Straight answers

Is Terrapin Truck GPS free?

The Android app is currently in testing. We plan to offer both free and paid options, but pricing has not been finalized. Early-access subscribers will receive updates when details are available.

Which phones does it run on?

Terrapin is currently being tested on Android phones, including foldable devices. An iPhone version is not yet available.

Does it replace Google Maps?

Terrapin is a separate truck-focused navigation app that uses Google Maps technology for maps and turn-by-turn directions. It adds vehicle profiles, possible low-clearance alerts, and searches for stops along your route.

Do I need a CDL to use it?

No. Terrapin can be used with vehicles of different sizes. Whether you need a commercial driver’s license depends on your vehicle, its weight rating, how it is used, and applicable laws. The app displays a reminder for rigs over 26,000 pounds.

How accurate are the bridge alerts?

Alerts use records from the federal National Bridge Inventory. Those records may be incomplete or outdated, and they do not always identify which roadway a clearance measurement applies to. For that reason, Terrapin labels these warnings “Possible low clearance.” Always obey posted clearance signs and verify that your route is safe for your vehicle. See how low-clearance alerts work.
