Low-clearance alerts
Before and during a trip, Terrapin compares your planned route with more than 66,000 low-clearance bridge records from the federal National Bridge Inventory. If a recorded clearance, after applying a six-inch safety margin, is lower than your vehicle’s height, the app displays a warning and provides a spoken alert approximately one mile ahead.
- Warnings are labeled “Possible low clearance” because the source data may not indicate whether a clearance applies to the road you’re traveling on or a road beneath it.
- Nearby duplicate records are combined to help prevent repeated alerts for the same bridge.

Rig profiles
Choose a preset profile for a rental box truck or enter your own measurements. For semis and hot shot rigs, save the truck and trailer separately. Terrapin uses the greater of the two heights and combines their lengths and weights when calculating the vehicle profile.
- Driving without a trailer? Select “No trailer” to use your tractor-only profile.
- Enter measurements in feet, inches, and pounds. Verify them against your vehicle label and documentation.
- See vehicle profiles.
Stops along your route
Search for diesel, gasoline, CNG, rest areas, truck parking, hotels, hospitals, restaurants, coffee shops, pharmacies, truck repair, laundromats, and grocery stores along your route. Results generally focus on locations ahead of you, although nearby locations just behind you may also appear. Data comes from public and open sources.
- Adjust the search distance from zero to 10 miles off your route.
- Search for service plazas and travel centers along toll roads and major highways.
Driving overlay
Choose up to three types of upcoming stops to display on your navigation screen, such as rest areas, fuel stations, and truck parking. Distances update as you drive. Tap a result to add it to your trip.
Voice search
Tap “Speak” and tell Terrapin what you’re looking for. For example, say “Hotels in about three hours,” “Diesel in two hours,” or “Find a hospital.” The app estimates your future location and searches nearby.
Driving comfort
- View your next turn and remaining distance in an Android notification while the app runs in the background. Use “Resume” or “Exit” to manage navigation.
- Choose spoken directions and alerts, alerts only, or no voice guidance. You can also enable automatic muting during phone calls.
- Turn off vibration for upcoming turns and customize your speeding-alert threshold.
- Choose whether to display a warning when a GPS-location modification app is detected.
- Keep your screen awake while Terrapin is open.
Home-screen widgets
Add a home-screen widget with your vehicle, a “Where to?” shortcut, and saved places. A second widget displays details from your most recent trip, including distance, duration, and the lowest recorded bridge clearance.
Coming later: Planned features include expanded truck-specific routing, a tablet-optimized layout, and an iPhone app. We’ll update this page as those features become available.
