Frequently asked questions
Short answers to what drivers ask us most. Anything missing? Write to us.
Is it made for driveaway drivers?
Yes. Driveaway work means a different vehicle on every job, so Terrapin lets you save a profile for each one and switch between them. You can look up a vehicle by its VIN to fill in the basics, then enter the height you measured. See driveaway profiles.
Is Terrapin Truck GPS free?
The Android app is in testing, and pricing has not been set. We expect to offer a free option and a paid one. Join the early-access list and we’ll email you when pricing is final.
Which phones does it run on?
Android phones and tablets, including foldables. An Android Auto version and a Wear OS companion are in testing. An iPhone app is in development and isn’t available yet.
Does it replace Google Maps?
No. Terrapin is a separate navigation app for trucks and RVs. It uses Google’s maps and turn-by-turn guidance, and adds vehicle profiles, possible low-clearance alerts, and stops along your route.
Do I need a CDL to use it?
No. Anyone can use the app. Whether you need a commercial driver’s license depends on your vehicle, its weight rating, how you use it, and the law where you drive. The app shows a reminder for rigs over 26,000 pounds. It does not decide whether you need a CDL.
How accurate are the bridge alerts?
Alerts come from the federal National Bridge Inventory. Those records can be incomplete or out of date, and they don’t always say which road a clearance applies to. That’s why Terrapin labels every alert “Possible low clearance.” Always obey posted clearance signs. How the alerts work.
